The Mere Exposure Effect
Robert Zajonc showed that simply seeing something often makes us like it more. Two hundred replications and one big meta-analysis later, the effect is among the most reliable in social psychology.

There is a song you did not like the first time you heard it. You heard it again at a coffee shop, then on a friend's playlist, then in the background of a commercial, and somewhere along the way it stopped being annoying and started being yours. You can run this same test on faces. People you found unremarkable when you met them become, after a few weeks of casual contact, faces you are pleased to see. Run it on your own face: when you look in the mirror you are seeing a left-right reversal of yourself, and when your friends look at you they are seeing the camera version. There is a famous 1977 study, by Mita, Dermer, and Knight, in which subjects preferred the mirror-reversed photos of themselves and their friends preferred the camera-version photos. Each side liked the version it had seen more often.
The phenomenon has a tidy name and a tidy literature behind it. It is called the mere exposure effect, and it says that repeated, unreinforced exposure to a stimulus tends to warm us toward it. The finding is almost embarrassingly simple. You do not have to like the thing the first time. You do not have to attend to it carefully. You do not have to remember encountering it. The exposure alone is doing the work, quietly, in a part of the mind that does not file reports.

The 1968 monograph
The foundational paper is Robert Zajonc's 1968 monograph supplement in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, titled Attitudinal Effects of Mere Exposure. Zajonc, then at the University of Michigan and later at Stanford, ran a series of studies on Chinese-like characters, photographs of faces, and nonsense words. He showed subjects each stimulus a different number of times, ranging from zero presentations to twenty-five, and then asked them how much they liked each one. The result was a clean, monotonic effect over the experimental range: more exposures, more liking. The stimuli were affectively neutral. The subjects did not know the researchers cared about liking. The exposure was the only manipulation, and the rating shifted anyway.
Zajonc was clear about what he was claiming and what he was not. He was not claiming familiarity itself produced understanding. He was not claiming the effect was strong enough to overcome real dislike. He was claiming that, all else equal, the simple fact of having seen a thing before bent our attitude toward it in the positive direction. The monograph is about twenty-seven pages long, and most of those pages are tables. The theoretical argument is contained in a few paragraphs at the end. Zajonc thought the effect was adaptive: things you have encountered repeatedly without coming to harm are probably safe, and a small bias toward what is familiar is, on a long evolutionary timeline, a reasonable default.
The Bornstein meta-analysis
A finding this clean invites two reactions. The first is enthusiasm. The second, properly, is skepticism: surely something this tidy will not survive contact with two decades of replication. In 1989 Robert Bornstein published, in Psychological Bulletin, a meta-analysis titled Exposure and Affect: Overview and Meta-Analysis of Research, 1968-1987. He pulled together more than two hundred experiments and ran the numbers.
The effect held. It was real, it was robust, and it was moderated by the things you might guess would moderate it. Stimulus complexity mattered: more complex stimuli supported more exposures before satiation set in. Exposure duration mattered: brief exposures produced larger effects than long ones, a counterintuitive finding we will return to in a moment. Exposure frequency mattered, but in a non-linear way. The relationship between number of exposures and warmth toward the stimulus was inverted-U shaped. Liking rose quickly over the early exposures, peaked in the moderate range, and then either plateaued or, at very high counts, slowly declined. The brain has a satiation curve and you can run past it.
The peripheral-attention curiosity
Of all the findings in this literature, the most interesting one for anyone designing ambient devices is this: exposures presented briefly and in the periphery of attention often produced larger mere-exposure effects than exposures the subject deliberately attended to. Bornstein reported this in his 1989 meta-analysis, and a long subsequent line of work has confirmed it. Subliminal and near-subliminal presentations, incidental glimpses, and stimuli presented while the subject was occupied with another task all tended to produce stronger preference shifts than full, focused inspection.
The reason most theorists give is that focused attention activates the analytic mind, and the analytic mind is more likely to notice the manipulation and discount the resulting warmth. The peripheral system does no such checking. It tags the stimulus as familiar, familiarity feels good, and the resulting preference is not corrected by any reasoning step. This is exactly the kind of finding that should make a thoughtful designer nervous and a thoughtful psychologist careful, because it points to a real channel of influence that operates beneath the level of deliberate consent.

Illusory truth
The exposure effect has a cousin in cognitive psychology, and the cousin has darker implications. In 1977, Hasher, Goldstein, and Toppino published, in the Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, a study showing that repeated statements are rated as more likely to be true. They called this the illusory truth effect. Subjects read a long list of trivia statements over multiple sessions. Some statements were repeated. Repeated statements were judged as truer, regardless of whether they were actually true.
The illusory truth effect has been replicated extensively, and the replications have gotten more disquieting over time. Fazio, Brashier, Payne, and Marsh published a 2015 paper in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General showing that the effect survives even when subjects know the statements may be false, and even when the statements contradict information the subjects already have in memory. Repetition makes a claim feel familiar, and familiarity, in the absence of a deliberate check, is enough to tip the felt-truth needle.
This is the dark side of the literature, and it is fair to name it plainly. The same peripheral-attention channel that makes a piece of music grow on you also makes a repeated political slogan feel more credible, a repeated brand claim feel more trustworthy, and a repeated lie feel less obviously a lie. Advertisers have known this for a century. Propagandists have known it longer. Treating the mere exposure effect as neutral would be dishonest. The mechanism does not care what is being repeated.
Boundaries and satiation
Two boundary conditions are worth keeping in mind. The first is the inverted-U. Repetition is not infinitely beneficial. Run a song often enough and you will hate it. Run a phrase often enough and it becomes wallpaper at best and irritation at worst. Bornstein's meta-analysis put the peak of the curve somewhere in the moderate range, which is convenient for any system that controls its own cadence and inconvenient for any system that relies on saturation.
The second boundary is that the effect is most reliable for stimuli that start out affectively neutral. Mere exposure does not rescue things you actively dislike. If your first impression is strongly negative, repetition tends to entrench the dislike, not melt it. The honest reading is that the effect operates in the wide middle, on the everyday objects and phrases and faces that are neither loved nor hated at first contact, and quietly nudges them toward the warm side over time.

Implications for ambient repetition
Stack the findings up. Exposure produces preference. Peripheral exposure produces more preference than focused exposure. Moderate repetition is the peak, not maximum repetition. The effect is most reliable on stimuli that start out roughly neutral. And the cousin effect, illusory truth, shows that repetition shifts not only liking but felt truth. These are facts about the human mind, and they describe, with uncanny precision, the conditions a wall-mounted frame quietly cycling curated content would actually create.
A frame on the wall is, by physical position, a peripheral display. The content arrives while you are doing something else: making coffee, walking past, pulling on a coat. The cadence is slow, which keeps the system in the moderate-exposure range rather than driving past the inverted-U peak. The content is chosen, ahead of time, by the person who owns the frame. That last fact is the most important one in the whole essay. The mere-exposure channel is real and it is powerful. The ethical question is who gets to decide what flows through it. A scrolling feed makes that choice for you, on the basis of what keeps you engaged. A curated frame makes that choice yours, on the basis of what you, in a calm and deliberate moment, decided you wanted to be repeatedly exposed to.
