Match the glass, then do the one thing under it. Setup steps are further down this page.
Hold any front button for about one second, then let go. A short tap leaves the frame as it is. Plugging in the USB-C cable does not wake it.
You should see the QuipCast lockup, "The wisdom of humanity, on your wall.", and "Hold any front button for one second to set up your frame." If a hold does nothing, use the charge step below.
Plug the USB-C cable into the port on the back and leave it there. A full charge takes up to about 7 hours. The frame checks the battery about every 30 minutes and wakes on its own once it has charged. You do not need to press a button for that.
Join the open network named QuipCast-Setup-XXXX. XXXX is the last four characters of the hardware id, the line under the serial on the back label. There is no password. You can scan the QR on this card with your phone camera instead of typing the name.
The setup page should open by itself. If it does not, open 192.168.4.1 in the browser while the phone is still on that network. On an iPhone, joining should open a sign-in sheet. If you do not see QuipCast-Setup-XXXX in the list, scan the QR on the card with the camera. If the sheet does not open after you join, open 192.168.4.1.
Scan the QR on the back label. It opens www.quipcast.app/pair/qr?hwid= with this frame's hardware id, and the page then asks for the 4-character code on the glass. Or open quipcast.app/pair and type that code. The QR on the glass goes to the same kind of page. Scanning does not pair the frame by itself.
The glass does not say "Quip not found." A frame that is not claimed comes back to this code card. Press any button for a fresh code. If the glass says "Couldn't load a quip," press Next. It tries again on the next refresh.
Hold the two outer buttons, Love and Next, together for about 5 seconds. Let go when the Frame service menu appears, then press Love. That opens Wi-Fi setup.
Turning the power switch off and back on also opens setup, when the frame has no saved network, or when the glass is showing a Wi-Fi error, "Wi-Fi setup is off," or a leftover join screen, and the battery can run setup. On a Compass that switch is inside the frame. Use the buttons. Do not open the frame.

The serial is the bold line right under the logo on the back label, to the right of the QR code. It looks like QC-C1-2608-00003-U. Below it are the hardware id, the model, "Setup help: quipcast.app/help," and the FCC line.

Plug the included USB-C cable into the port on the back of the frame. A full charge takes up to about 7 hours; you can keep going with setup while it charges. If the screen shows a "Time to charge" card, just leave it plugged in. It wakes up on its own once it has enough charge, no button needed.
If the frame needs a network, it shows a setup screen with the name of its own temporary WiFi network. On your phone, join that network, and a setup page opens where you pick your home WiFi and enter its password. The frame can only see 2.4 GHz networks; if yours doesn't appear, check that 2.4 GHz is enabled on your router. You can bring the setup screen up anytime: hold the two outer buttons together for about 5 seconds, then press Love.
Once online, the frame shows a 4-character code. Visit quipcast.app/pair on your phone or laptop, sign in, and type the code. Your first quip appears moments later. Enter the code soon after it appears; if it goes stale the frame simply issues a fresh one.
Pick a well-lit spot. With no backlight, Compass looks best where you could easily read a book. Eye level, somewhere you naturally glance: over a desk, in a hallway, by the kettle. The sawtooth hanger on the back sits flush on a standard picture nail or hook (hardware not included).
Along the bottom of the frame: Love, Pass, and Next. One press each, and they work whether the frame is awake or asleep (any press wakes it).
A few seconds of quiet, then a brief flash as the ink physically rearranges: that's electronic paper working, not a glitch. Tapping the same button repeatedly counts once, and mashing different buttons together deliberately does nothing, so curious kids can't change your settings.
Hold the two outer buttons (Love and Next) together for about 5seconds, and let go when the Frame service menu appears. Press Love to open Wi-Fi setup, press Pass to erase saved networks and unlink the frame from your account (it asks you to confirm), or press Next to go back to your quips. If you do nothing for 30 seconds it returns to quips by itself. Hold all three front buttons together for about5 seconds to connect with the WPS button on your router instead. A frame that can't reach a saved network keeps trying that network quietly, and opens its setup screen on its own a few times a day.
The frame tells you on screen when it needs a charge. Lift it off its hook, plug the USB-C cable into the port on the back, and let it drink. It wakes up on its own once it has recovered and picks up right where it left off. On a daily refresh cadence a charge lasts months; faster cadences trade battery for freshness, and you can change yours anytime from the dashboard.
