Build your own e-ink quote frame, or buy a QuipCast Compass?

A DIY e-ink quote frame starts around $200 in parts (an Inkplate 10 board or a Waveshare panel with a Raspberry Pi, a frame, a battery) plus your weekends and your own quote list. QuipCast Compass is the finished version for $299: a 10-inch e-paper frame, a curated library, three buttons, no code.

QuipCast Compass, a 10-inch black-and-white e-paper frame in natural ash

If you have ever searched for an e-ink quote display, you have seen the projects: an Inkplate pulling a random quote from a public API, a Waveshare panel on a Raspberry Pi showing a literary clock, a frame from IKEA with a board taped behind the mat. They are good projects. Compass started as one. This page is for deciding whether you want the project or the frame. Parts prices are the vendors' list prices as of October 2026.

When building your own is the better choice

Build it when the building is the point.

  • You want to learn ESP32 or Raspberry Pi, e-paper drivers, and deep sleep.
  • You want total control: your fonts, your layout, your own data on the glass.
  • You already own the parts, or you want the lowest parts cost and your time is free.
  • You want it to show things a quote frame never will: a clock, a feed, a sensor.

When Compass is the better choice

Buy it when you want the result on the wall this month, and you want the lines to be good.

  • You want the library: thousands of lines across 70+ topics, each one scored and sourced.
  • You want the frame to look like it belongs in the room, mat and real wood included.
  • You want battery life that was measured, not hoped for.
  • You want three buttons, no app, and someone to email if something goes wrong.

And if you build one anyway, we would like to see it. The projects that inspired Compass are still out there, and the panel is a joy to work with.

Questions people ask

What is inside a QuipCast Compass?
The same class of panel a good DIY build uses: a 10-inch, 1200 x 825 reflective e-paper panel on an ESP32 board, in a natural ash wood frame with a cream double mat, on a rechargeable battery. The difference is everything around it: a curated library across 70+ topics, typography tuned for the panel, three buttons, Wi-Fi setup from your phone, and someone to call.
Can I put my own quotes on a Compass?
Yes. Bring-your-own lines are part of Plus (up to 100) and Premium (up to 1,000), typed on the website and served on the frame with the same typography as the library. Free is a daily classic rotation and does not include bring-your-own.
Is a DIY frame cheaper?
In parts, usually a little. An Inkplate 10 with its enclosure and battery lists around $245, before a wood frame and mat; a Waveshare 7.5-inch panel is about $57 before the Raspberry Pi that drives it. Compass is $299 and includes two months of Premium. The real difference is the hours: wiring, firmware, a quote source, typesetting, and sleep timing.
Does Compass need a subscription?
No. Free shows one classic card a day with no subscription. Plus is $4.39/mo or $39/yr and Premium is $7.99/mo or $69/yr. After that, your frame keeps working on Free. Upgrading is up to you.
How long does a Compass take to ship?
With a Founders Club code, your Compass ships right away. Without a code, the order is a backorder and ship is about 45–60 days, shown before you pay. United States only.
